Cross Flow Fans — selection guide

Cross flow (tangential) fans use a long cylindrical impeller that draws air in across its length and discharges it as an even, wide air curtain. Low noise, a slim envelope and a discharge that matches the width of the appliance make them the standard fan for indoor air-conditioning units, air curtains, elevators and linear air supply in appliances and electronics.

How to select a Cross Flow Fan

  1. Specify the impeller length and diameter from the housing you have — the discharge width must match the outlet.
  2. Cross flow fans develop low static pressure (typically below 100 Pa); design the air path with minimal resistance.
  3. Motor type follows the appliance: AC for mains-powered units, DC (12 / 24 / 48 V) for appliances and low-voltage equipment, EC where speed control and feedback are needed.
  4. Noise is dominated by tip speed — a longer impeller at lower speed is quieter than a short one at high speed for the same airflow.
  5. Confirm mounting direction and bearing side against the drawing; many lengths are made to order.

How do I choose the length of a cross flow fan?

Match the impeller length to the discharge opening of your unit; airflow scales almost linearly with length at the same diameter and speed. Use the size buckets in this category or filter by diameter, then compare lengths within the series.

Can cross flow fans work against ducts?

Only against very low resistance. Static pressure capability is typically below 100 Pa, so they are used for free discharge or short, open air paths. For ducted duties choose an inline duct or centrifugal fan.

Are DC and EC cross flow fans speed controllable?

Yes. DC versions are controlled by voltage or PWM, EC versions by 0–10 V / PWM with tacho or fault feedback. AC versions can be supplied with tapped windings for two or three speeds.
